Barely a month after launching a national campaign to ban grocers from using electronic shelf labels (ESLs), the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union denounced Walmart’s plans to roll out ESLs chainwide and called on lawmakers to enact legislation prohibiting the technology.
“Walmart’s move to accelerate its rollout of electronic shelf labels coincides with Congress and states considering legislation that would ban this technology and the predatory pricing practices that go along with it,” said Ademola Oyefeso, VP of UFCW International. “No retailer should beat lawmakers to the punch and get to escape accountability for the harms these technologies will cause consumers and workers.”
About 2,300 Walmart U.S. locations are already using digital shelf labels, and the retailer expects the technology to be chainwide within the next year, Walmart announced this week.
