American grocery shoppers still prefer visiting brick and mortar stores for a greater sense of control, confidence, and efficiency, especially when selecting perishable items like produce and meat, a recent study has found.

In-person grocery shopping also “plays a social role,” according to the Food Industry Association’s (FMI) U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends 2026 report, “helping consumers care for their households and stay connected to food, culture, and shared experiences.”

The overall in-person experience leads to customer loyalty as well as return customers, the report suggests.
